ALS-2 the next generation of nitrogen sensor is now available from YARA through Precision Decisions Ltd. The ALS 2 is a brand new nitrogen sensor with functions such as LED lamps, flexible mounting with a modular system and the ability to run when the crop is covered by dew.

The new YARA ALS-2 N-Sensor is now available through Precision Decisions Ltd. Larger scanned area than ALS-1, LED illumination, works on dew covered crops, modular design and much lighter than ALS-1, easy fit to plastic roofed tractor and sprayer cabs.This is one of the first supplied ALS-2's to James O'Reilly at Ballyragget, Co Kilkenny.

The ALS (active light source) N-Sensor contains built in xenon (ALS-1) or LED (ALS-2) flash lamps, which read the crop in the same way as the Classic Sensor. The self-contained light source means it can operate independent of light conditions – even into the night.

Both systems use the same agronomic algorithms for optimum site-specific fertilisation and both are connected to a terminal in the vehicle which stores and processes crop and GNSS data.

Brief about the big changes ALS-2:

  • Flexible mounting of measuring heads
    Yara N-Sensor ALS 2 is modular and easy to mount, either traditionally on the tractor roof or by disassembling the modules and mounting the measuring heads directly on the implement or boom. Easily mounted to plastic tractor or sprayer roofs
  • LED instead of xenon
    ALS means active light source (Active Light Source) and on the previous sensor xenon flashlamps are used. LED lamps are used on the Yara N-Sensor ALS 2. They are more durable, reduce power consumption and help reduce weight. The new sensor weighs only about half of its predecessor, making it easier to mount and move.
  • Can be used in dew
    Previously, dew on the leaves has generated disturbances for the sensors. Now a new algorithm is used that can filter out the dew effect. Yara N-Sensor ALS 2 can therefore be used to a greater extent, regardless of weather and time of day.
  • Vertical measurement
    Yara’s unique measurement at an angle to the crop gives you a better measurement of the green mass. However, in order to increase the flexibility of the installation, the new measuring heads can be mounted both traditionally at an angle and vertically straight down towards the crop.
  • Compatible with most brands
    The new Yara N-Sensor ALS 2 can be connected to almost all types of sprayers and fertiliser spreaders in the industry. It supports both ISOBUS and serial connection to tools.

The N-Sensor system

N-Sensor enables real-time variable rate application of fertilisers by measuring a crop’s nitrogen status in a precise, easy-to-use, and cost-efficient system.

Optimal fertiliser rates in every part of the field have a number of substantial benefits: crop potential and fertiliser efficiency are increased (leading to a reduction in carbon footprint of 10-30%); yields are increased using the same intensity of fertiliser while combine performance at harvest is increased by up to 20% because greater crop consistency and reduced lodging make harvesting easier.

While the N-Sensor has agronomic calibrations for nitrogen applications on all major UK crops, its application is not limited to nitrogen. The Sensor’s versatility means it can also be used for variable applications of other products, or in conjunction with a number of specialist modules (for example, potato haulm killing). The N-Sensor’s mapping abilities are ideal for monitoring crop growth, comparing emergence and field performance year to year, and mapping weed growth.
